John Kaefer recently scored Microsoft Studios and Remedy Entertainment's live-action series “Quantum Break”, developed exclusively for Xbox One. The revolutionary game blurs the line between episodic television and cinematic gameplay, integrating the two into one seamless, uniquely immersive experience. Hailed as a "masterpiece" by Gaming Trend, "Quantum Break" was the #1 best-selling Xbox game worldwide in April 2016 and is currently the biggest-selling Microsoft Studios release for Xbox One.
Recent television projects include the original drama series “Sequestered” on Crackle and the dance drama series “Making Moves” on Fullscreen, as well as the main thematic music packages for “Good Morning America” and “20/20” on ABC. John's music is widely featured in popular series on NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS, USA, TNT, TBS, Discovery, and The Documentary Channel, as well as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. Recent feature film credits include the scores to “Party Boat” (Sony Pictures/Crackle) and “Night Sweats” (Witness Films), the feature documentaries "Silence Patton" and “A Polite Bribe” (Nexus Media), and music for the Warner Brothers Picture’s feature “Mama’s Boy”, among others. He has also scored dozens of national ad campaigns, including work for Mercedes, Hewlett-Packard, Comcast, LG, ABC, Simmons, Pfizer, and Marriott. He has worked with legendary composer Mike Post and has served as a judge/advisor for the BMI Foundation Pete Carpenter Fellowship.
As a composer for the concert stage, John has enjoyed performances worldwide at major venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, and La Schola Cantorum in Paris. His work is programmed frequently by leading musicians and ensembles, including The Pacific Symphony, Eighth Blackbird, the Aspen Music Festival Contemporary Ensemble, The Hollywood Chamber Orchestra, The Juilliard Orchestra, Symphony In C (Haddonfield Symphony), The New York Youth Symphony, the Chamber Symphony of New Jersey, The Yale Philharmonia, and others.
John recently conducted the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra in the world premiere of his "States Of Motion", a concerto for piano and strings, featuring pianist Molly Morkoski. The three movement work was performed in July 2016 at the Montalbahn Theater in Hollywood. Other recent commissions include a viola and laptop piece for Jessica Meyer (premiered at Spectrum in New York) and a violin and piano work for violinist Cyrus Beroukhim (premiered at Music On Madison in New York).
John has received awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the ASCAP Foundation, BMI (concert music and TV/film), Meet The Composer, the Yaddo Corporation, the American Composers Forum, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and the Barlow Endowment, among others. He serves on the Board Of Advisors for Composers Now.
John earned his Doctorate from The Juilliard School. His work is praised as “continually fascinating, a kinetic tour de force” (The San Francisco Classical Voice), “steely and hard edged” (The Los Angeles Times), and “vividly scored” (The New York Times). He also holds degrees in composition from Yale University (MM) and the Eastman School of Music (BM).
